Art Update & Leaving for NC & VA

~* happy birthday sweet Matsuo!*~
I made a little sketch of a sweet strawberry cake for Alan’s bday. I intended to draw him a legitimate gift, but his bday snuck up on me… I’m going to try to over the next few days! But in the meantime, happy birthday and I hope you have a great day!

Cat’s Story #5: Going on a Trip by ~beyourpet

I made this as an announcement of leave! But I am repeating myself a bit…
Moving on…

Last night me and Trev went to eat sushi at one of my fave restaurants. It’s the yummiest place! And today I am just at home while he had to travel/work.

Tomorrow morning we’re leaving to go visit NC and VA, like I mentioned in the last entry. I’m super excited and sort of nervous for whatever reason. And I know I should really be packing and getting ready to leave right now, but I really wanted to make a post of some of the art I made and hadn’t posted here yet, and I knew if I didn’t post it I’d be thinking “I need to post that” all during the trip… Because I am weird like that… So I just decided this would be time well spent… hahaha.
I hope to take photos and such of our trip obviously. So hopefully I will be able to make another big post when we get home! (Or while I’m there if it’s boring enough).

I know this trip doesn’t seem like a big deal, but for me it really feels huge. I think it’s because it’s the first step to making moving away from Austin feel *real*. And as much as I will dreadfully miss a lot of people and places and things here in Texas, I have been ready to move for a long time now. I’ve lived in Austin about 6 years now, and I have been ready to move for about 3 of those years! Not because it’s not a great place, it is, but it’s just not my place. I was describing to Trev the other day how Austin has never felt like mine, like my home, like I connected with it. Kind of like when you’re in a relationship and you just know that they’re not “the one”. I know Austin is not the one for me, I just don’t feel it… And I’ve been really looking forward to feeling a connection to a place again, being able to call my house my “home”, a town my town, and really mean it.

I just hope that home will be North Carolina…. But like I said before, I’m trying to stay optimistic no matter what the outcome is! And above everything else, I am so sosososo proud of Trev for all his hard work and intelligence! He’s been working his ass off to get into the law schools of his choice, and he made it. He’s the most impressive person I’ve ever known and I feel so lucky to call him my boyfriend! I love him.

ANYWAY. Point is, this trip feels like the beginning of a new chapter, or the prologue to the new chapter. So I’m super excited about it! I feel refreshed and hopeful.

I wanted to post these photos I just took of a package I just got in the mail… The photos are pretty crappy ‘cos I just took them really fast, but I will take some better photos later because I do want to talk about this girl’s artwork and books, because she inspires me greatly!
It’s Emily Martin’s art, which I have mentioned on this diary several times… I just bought her Alice Postcard Set, and it came int the mail nice and pretty! Very excited to put these up on my walls in my new home.

The package they came in. I have a sort of love for seeing how people package things...

Back side of package, about the same as the front.

Inside the package, everything wrapped in a cellophane bag.

Inside the cellophane bag. Some cute little extras, a postcard ad for her books, and an adorable biz card.

All the Alice postcards together.

Closer shot of them all.

Well, I love her artwork. It’s very cute and dreamy, and I love her choices of color palettes. You can see her shop here, and her website here.

Oh and here are some cutie photos I took of Takkun the other day. He was sleeping so funny with his little leg hanging off the ledge of the window, hahah.

The past couple of weeks I’ve been posting a lot of drawings and photos (or at least a lot for me). All my drawings can be viewed larger with descriptions and such on my DeviantArt page, in case you didn’t know, and same goes for my photos on my Flickr page.

Character Profile Sketches by ~beyourpet

Some character profile sketches from the book I’m writing. This was the first sketch I did of all of them, it’s obviously super sloppy, but it’s just a quick sketch of their general feeling. I’m still working on their looks and fleshing out their personalities.
So far I have (youngest to oldest) Rabbit, Poppet, Miette, and Thorne. And some of their pets which I will explain their role at a later time.

And below are more drawings / paintings of the characters. See their DeviantArt page (by clicking the images) to see a description of each one.

Lately I’ve been drawing these little kitty comics, because I’ve been trying to make myself draw more often… And there’s no better way to make yourself draw than to just draw little comics about your day and what not. So that’s what I’ve been doing…
If you can’t read them, click the images to go to their DeviantArt page and view them closer up (also includes a transcription in their descriptions).

Sorry if this is repetitive to anyone, but I promised myself I would start posting all my art n my diary! So everyone can be caught up with my life just by coming here… So here are the photos I have posted on Flickr lately, but had not posted here… They’re all fairly old, some from 2011, 2010, and older… Crazy how many photos I don’t post until years down the road, but when you have like 100+GB of photos on your computer… Well, it happens.

Tagged! & My Trip to NC & VA

I’m really excited for the weekend, because we’re taking a trip to visit the places we might move to. North Carolina and Virginia (and Chicago just briefly because we happen to have a lay over there for 3 hours, so we’ll probably go to eat or just look around if at all possible).
Trev wants to go to the campuses to talk to advisers and professors and such, and to just look around, and we’ll also spend a lot of time looking around the main areas of the towns, to get a feel of them. I’m really excited to do this because it will make it all feel really real! But also scared, because if we really like one place and don’t get to move there, it will be sad. But I’m trying to just be optimistic about all the places so that we’re happy no matter what happens…

We fly out Thursday and get back Tuesday, so lots of hotel staying! And a decent amount of flying. Flying is pretty weird to me, sort of annoying and exciting at the same time. The first time I ever flew was just last November when we went to Disney World… So it’s still really new to me.

It actually helps me to pack though. Because you have to pack the “bare minimum” when flying, and my impulse is usually to pack the “bare maximum“, haha… So it actually helps me to live out of a suitcase without so much fuss. Which I hate and like at the same time…

So I will finally do Matsuo‘s tag… Sorry Matsuo for taking a year and a half to do this!

Here are the rules:

(To see more, click the CUT link)
Okay let’s get started!

Eleven Facts About Me:
(Sorry some of these are kind of long…)
1. I am a very boring person in a lot of ways and I love it… For instance, the idea of going to a colonial museum or eating breakfast at a little cafe sounds a million times more exciting to me than going to a party or a concert. I’m not really into the normal “youthful” stuff I guess you could say. I am sometimes, and there’s been periods of my life where I was more into it, but I get a lot more pleasure out of simple happy moments and interesting curious experiences. I also am not a big fan of drinking (I think I am allergic, it *always* makes me feel sick no matter what) or drugs, like pot (they kind of terrify me because of the psychological damage it can cause to those susceptible to neurological probs, like myself).

2. I have about a million different hobbies and interests, and all of them can totally excite and engross me with little effort. This is why I tend to go from project to project, or why I’ll post a ton of art or diary entries and then nothing for a while. I have periods of different hobbies. For instance, some of my latest trends have gone from being obsessed with organizing & planners, to being obsessed with blogs and improving my diary, to being obsessed with developing story characters, then writing a book, and now it’s with moving. I know it’s pretty sensible if you know my life, but I guess the main point about it is that these things *consume* my thoughts for periods of time, and then just stop out of nowhere and something else takes it’s place!

3.I’m really into following someone’s life through blogs and such. I currently subscribe to 205 blogs and about 50 of those I check pretty regularly (the rest I just check in when I have the time or craving to). I guess I am the type of person that likes to live vicariously through someone else. I also do this with YouTube vloggers, I subscribe to probably about as many channels on YouTube as I do blogs… Right now off the top of my head I’ve been obsessed with at least 5 different bloggers that I am reading their back entries over time. It’s a fun past time!

4. I’m really interested in “simple living”, as in growing food and having some chickens and goats and such. I think I get this from my dad’s survivalist mentality and my mom’s interest in crafts, gardening, and home schooling. I really like the idea of living off the land and just making things work without getting a bunch of extra help through technology and products. Not that I do this well now, because it’s actually quite expensive to begin with, but I think it’d be awesome to own some chickens, a goat, some land, and grow some of our food! It would feel very satisfying.

5. I’ve always been really attracted to old houses (I grew up in a house that was, at the time, about 100 years old). I would love to own and live in one one of these days, if I ever have the money for it. They take a lot of work to maintain, but the structure, architecture, and modeling in old houses are pretty much unbeatable… I really miss having hard wood floors. I would LOVE to have an attic that’s actually usable. Having an artist studio or a bedroom in an attic that can be reached by stair case would be a dream.

6. I am sosososo into ghosts and paranormal stuff! I love hearing people’s ghostly or weird experiences, and always hope to have my own… I listen to Coast to Coast whenever I can, and am a big fan of shows like My Ghost Story. If you ever have a good (true) story to tell me, or a show to recommend, please do!

7. I love breakfast food and baked goods to a fault. I plan to have a “tea party” themed birthday party this year in which I am allowed to consume (as well as my guests) ridiculous amounts of tea and crumpets, petit fours and butter cookies. Yummmm!

8. I hate conflict, but I happen to be an opinionated person at the same time… So it’s kind of weird. Sometimes I will speak my mind but then if someone gets riled up over it and act negatively about it, and I usually get really depressed about it and dwell on it for days… So I try really hard to avoid upsetting people, but sometimes I talk too much about what I’m thinking… But I really really dislike conflict…

9. I actually have a suspicion that the internet will die at some point, like, I’m not sure why or what I think will cause it. Probably censorship or laws and that such trouble… But I do have a conspiracy theory that the internet will be taken away from regular people… Maybe replaced with something really unpleasant, something that makes more money for corporations… I don’t know. The internet is too good to be true. It scares me when I think about it so I try not to think about it.

10. I have probably mentioned this before because it’s been a consistent thing in my life since I can remember, but I have very strange dreams, every single night. They’re always weird and usually scary/gory/horrifying. Sometimes they’re just random and strange. They’re always beautiful in their own way… All of my dreams take place in this other world landscape where everything is decayed and dilapidated. I don’t know why. I hope one day I can put these places into my art, but I don’t even really know where to begin, they’re so vast and detailed… It would be like drawing the world you see around you, only harder because it’s a damn dream!

Now, on to the questions asked by Matsuo

◆ How was your high school year?
High school is pretty much a big empty space in my brain, I barely remember most of high school now, I don’t know why. I spent a lot of time alone, and some of my favorite memories were from time spent online. It’s the time when I got a lot more into online communities, and made some friends surfing diaries (I was on diaryland at that time). And eventually in 2005 I joined Flickr and made lots more friends there and got started with photography, but that was near the end of high school by that point. I hardly remember my early years of high school. I had a few different boyfriends throughout the years of high school, and one I ‘kept for 3 years and we broke up after high school. So most of my memories are from hanging out with any of them or my other friends… I had some amazing fun times with my school friends though, and my BFF Shelly, we had the *best* times.
The end of high school was consumed with the “sickness” of obsessing over a man a lot older than me, that essentially paid me no interest. I got very sick over this whole situation and was very very upset over the lack of outcome ‘cos I don’t know, I thought it would work out in a hot Lolita way I guess.
High school was a dazed haze over this. I feel like high school was wasted on me, I have been about 200 years old my entire life, I’ve never felt like a young person. I didn’t have a very normal reaction to high school… I think all my peers thought I was a total weirdo, and they would have been right probably. I thought most of them were totally boring and clueless anyway, so I didn’t let it get to me that often… Oh well. I actually enjoyed high school quite a bit, it was Jr High that was completely miserable for me.
(Here’s some photos from long ago: 1. Me and my friend from Jr High, this was the semester before high school started. 2. Me and my brother on prom night, bein’ the coolest kids there obviously. 3. My kitty Perk, who now lives with my mom & dad… He’s still my number one lover boy.
The next photos are some of the first photos I posted on Flickr when I first started doing photography… I took all of them in highschool with my point and shoot Kodak camera…)

◆ Which toy was your favorite as a kid?
Definitely the internet/computer sites and games I frequented. I LOVED Sierra games like King’s Quest, and those adventure games like Hugo (which apparently can be downloaded for free here: 1, 2, 3, 4)… So fun, those were the best times playing those with my bro and sis. Especially loved the website Purple-Moon.com which I spent many an hour on.
I consider comp games and stuff to be toys!

I was also SOOOO obsessed with American Girl stuff and dolls for years and years as a young kid. I even saved up all my money (it was $124 after shipping if I remember correctly), to buy a doll, and after about a year and a half of saving Christmas, birthday, and chore money, I finally bought one. Only to realize I was then too old to really enjoy her, other than fulfilling the original desire to own her. She still sits in a box. Unless I have a kid eventually, I wonder if she’ll ever again have such a caring owner as I was at 9?
I would spent hours just reading every line of those catalogs. Doing the math on how much more money I needed… Literally saving pennies to get her.
Other than her, I was obsessed with all of that brand’s products. I was also really into Littlest Pet Shop toys, and some of my other favorites were my two catwoman action figures, and a lego knight I called “The Black Knight” which rode a black horse and wore black and grey armor. When I was really young I had a toy truck I called “Indie truck” after Indiana Jones, I thought about him for a long time after misplacing him, I never forgot!
… I was a weirdo.

Here’s some of my toys from childhood that I managed to save from the boxes of junk my parents either got rid of or have somewhere in storage… I need to find ALL my stuff and get it from them if I ever have a place to store it. I’ll take better photos of these guys at some point… I didn’t feel like putting a ton of effort into it today.

(All the images are linked to larger versions, if you want to see them larger)
◆ What’s the most important thing you own?
Probably have to say my computer. I use it almost daily, it’s the source of communication with all of my friends, my family, and my art… It’s incredibly important to me really.

◆ How is a normal day of your life?
A normal day in my life consists of me waking up a few hours after Trev has left for work (I’m sorry Trev!!.. But I stay up much later than him usually). Rinsing off in the bath (I do this ritualistically, every morning and night… I hate feeling dirty), getting decently dressed (usually in pajamas), and then deciding on what my project for the day will be.
Sometimes I make to-do lists the night before so I don’t get sidetracked online.

Usually the projects are like “clean the house” so I’ll clean a lot and spend the majority of the day doing that… More often they’re like “do something arty, make something. Scan drawings. Edit photos…” etc. Or “post an entry on diary”… You get the idea. I do have an “artist’s life” so I spend a lot of time making art, thinking about what to make next, scheming about it, promoting myself online, looking for work… I feel bad that I’m not more “productive” sounding than that because it makes me sound lazy, but it’s actually a lot of hard focused work. Just not very normal I guess…

◆ Who’s your favorite artist?
This one is hard but I will say a few that have stuck with me at the core throughout my life… I like a ton of artists though, especially people I now have the pleasure of knowing, or some that I just admire from afar online… But some of my faves are (in no order):

• Louis Wain (pictured st)
• Winsor McCay (pictured 2nd)
• Igor Pantuhoff (pictured 3rd)
• Henry Darger (pictured 4th)
• Oyari Ashito (pictured 5th)
• Elodie LostFish (I used to draw her art for practice all the time, she was a huge inspiration growing up, it’s interesting to see how much she’s changed over the years. pictured 6th)
• Aya Takano (pictured 7th)
• Audrey Kawasaki
• Emily Winfield Martin
• Marisol (Mako) (It sounds silly because she’s a close friend, but she’s inspired me a ton since I met her several years ago!)
• Rachel Smythe (Her old comic “The Doctor Pepper Show” inspired me immensely)
• Sally Mann
• Nan Goldin

Here’s where I link some of my faves that have websites, in my LINK section of my main site.

◆ What’s your favorite pair of shoes?
I kind of love all my shoes equally for different reasons. But my favorite pair aesthetically would have to be the platform wedges I bought a few years ago and almost never ever wear. They’re SO tall, and I feel like I look funny walking in them, plus, living in Texas, you cannot go out in something like this without people treating you like you have leprosy or something… So I don’t wear them as often as I’d love to. They are “trailer trash chic” in my mind, which is why I love them hardcore.

I also very much love my Victorian-esque boots, my doc martins, my Emily brand kitty faced mary janes, my Lolita oxfords, and these heeled oxfords that literally cause nerve damage to my feet every time I wear them (but they’re just too pretty! hahaha)

when the fox hears the rabbit cry by BEYOURPET

◆ Who are your favorite bands or singers?
I’ve never liked compiling lists of fave bands/singers very much because I have so many and like a wide variety of music… I guess these are some of my all time faves in no order (the links bring up the artist’s Last.fm page, in case you wanna listen to some of their music):
Björk
Fiona Apple
The Paper Chase
Modest Mouse
Sneaker Pimps
Loli Ripe (18+ nsfw)
Elbow
Xiu Xiu
Animal Collective
Radiohead
Marc M. Sick Animation (18+ nsfw)
Final Fantasy (Owen Pallett)
Nat King Cole
Joanna Newsom
CocoRosie
James Blake

Honestly there’s so many more but I just can’t think… If anyone is actually interested, I have a Last.fm account that is sometimes hooked up to my player (although I don’t think it is right now…)
◆ What’s your favorite bag or backpack?
I really love my bear backpack. I am in love with animal shaped bags. They’re surprisingly hard to find though! But honestly I have an obsessions with cute bags. I just can never afford to buy them so I only get them every so often. But I love all the ones I have right now! I love highly functional bags that are really cute at the same time. The bear bag is more cute than functional, so he is the exception.

◆ What’s your favorite movie?
I have a lot of them. I keep favorites based on mood, so nothing really stands out as a #1 top fave… But a few of my faves are these (links go to the film’s IMDB page which usually has trailers and images if you want to see what the movie is like):
The Ring (US version)
Pretty Baby
Plain Dirty (aka Briar Patch)
Lolita (1997 version)
The Clique
White Oleander
The Piano
The Secret of Roan Inish
A Little Princess

◆ Do you have a lot of friends or just a few?
Very very few actually. I have a lot of online friends that I don’t talk to often, and only a handful of close online friends whom I talk to more often (but still not daily or even weekly sometimes). Only a handful of close people in real life, but I only see one of them on a regular basis (Trev), and most live in other places…

I love all my friends and feel really grateful to have them. But I wish we could see each other in real life, sometimes I just crave being able to spend time with them. Or have a sleep over or a ghost seance party or something…!

◆ Have you ever felt sad about material stuff?
Definitely. I am not strictly a material person, because I’ve done without and I can do without. But I do love my *things*, I get very nostalgic about them and sometimes almost think of them as living breathing, especially silly little toys and such. And I depend way too much on stuff like my computer (for every day life, career, friends), and I depend way too much on even sillier stuff for my dose of happiness (like getting a new journal, planner, video game, or decorating something I use regularly).
I also am very poor, so I get sad that I can’t buy things I want more often, haha. I usually get all my stuff as gifts from family and friends during the holiday or birthday times.
And I get sad sometimes that I can’t buy things to make someone else happy (like a gift, or to make the house nicer for Trev, or for our pets, etc)…
So yes I often get sad about material stuff I’d say…

Sometimes it makes me super jealous to see all the beauty guru girls showing their makeup or fashion “hauls”. The concept of a “haul” video just seems so weird to me, that anyone could shop that regularly. But I guess I’m jealous because if I had money I probably would shop a lot too… But my “hauls” usually consist of birthday/Christmas hauls, or “I spent only $100 that I got for my bday at a thrift store and got all this stuff!” hauls. Which makes a lot more sense I think than going shopping every single day… But oh well. I like being thrifty too, it makes me feel proud of all the stuff I can get for so little!

And now for my questions if anyone decides to do this tag…
I tag YOU!!!
And all the people that I follow or comment on regularly through blog or social networking! Please link to your version of this tag in the comments so I can see what you did!:

1. Are you very different now as you were when you were younger?
2. What is something about your current life that you love, and something you hate?
3. How do you relax and de-stress your life?
4. If you could have any lifestyle and routine, what would it be?
5. What are some of your favorite things online to do/look at?
6. What were your favorite books when you were a child?
7. How would you describe your everyday beauty or fashion routine?
8. When you have no obligations, how do you prefer to spend your free time?
9. What are you favorite foods or recipes?
10. What are your favorite anime or cartoons?
11. What interesting places have you traveled to?

*Sorry I don’t want to tag individually because I don’t know who even reads this diary! And everyone that I know reads it was already tagged.*

Well this whole entry with the photos and everything took up just about my entire day… That is really sad, no wonder I don’t have a job… I need to be more productive in a real way! Especially since I don’t think very many people actually visit this diary… Boooooo!

Art I Like: Ooc

The other day when I was looking through those “What’s in Your Purse” meme drawings on Pixiv, I came across this artist who I liked so much that I wanted to post about her art on a separate entry.
Her artist name on Pixiv is Ooc, and of course her sites are in Japanese so I’m not entirely sure if that’s her complete name or username or what. But I will link to all her profiles and sites so that you can look through all her work if you like. And in this entry I’ve included some of my favorite of hers, along with the direct links of them to her Pixiv account.

Her style is so cute and sweet. I love how sketchy it is and how much it looks like really well done children drawings. A style I love and gets under appreciated by people most of the time…
I especially love the way she draws eyes with those smudgy little lashes, and those adorable smudgy lips.
The little drawings of items in a room with food and pets are so precious to me, they look like Polly Pocket rooms!

Check out more of her work here:

(I do not own any of the images in this entry, they all belong to Ooc. Please note that if the owner wishes me to remove them, I will gladly do so. I just hope to give her some exposure she so deserves and mean nothing bad by posting them! ^ u ^)

Tagged! What’s in Your Bag Meme (Drawing Version)

So here is the drawing version of my “What’s in Your Bag / かばんのなかみは” meme. The girl is supposed to be me, but I have never been very good at drawing myself, I guess because I get too self aware and over think. So I just tried to get the jist, long brown hair, an outfit I wear (hah, I was actually wearing this outfit in the video from this same meme), straight-ish eyebrows… That’s about all that looks like me actually, haha. Oh well, you get the point. >w>

I got a lot of inspiration to do this again after looking through some old favorites of this meme, and after looking through one of the original posts of this meme on Pixiv (Definitely click through the 100+ pages of entries! I got to like page 20, but I’d like to eventually see them all.)
Since most of these amazing drawings made me want to do this tag again, I thought I’d post some of them here so that other people can get inspired to do their own version. : ) Please comment here and leave me a link to your version if you make a drawing, video, or diary entry with your own bag contents! I’d love to see them so much. ^ u ^

Obviously I had to scale the image down quite a bit to fit it into this entry, so please click the image or the link below to view it large on my DeviantArt page.

(See more people’s versions of this tag under the cut!)

I also have this labeled version that I posted to my scraps.
What’s in My Bag Labled Version by ~beyourpet

As well as posting my own meme drawing, I wanted to post a few others that I’ve found and liked a lot. I like them all for different reasons, some for style, some for organization, some for color or characters, etc.
Basically though, they’re all super cute and amazing! Please go check out the links to these artists and view the rest of their works…

(If anyone posted here would prefer that I take their image down, please just let me know. I’ve only posted them to be supportive and because I like them, but I also want to respect privacy, so I will quickly remove any of the images if asked to!)

Well that’s all I have for now… I am exhausted from editing this drawing and video and posting all of this today and my hand hurts from being on the computer! Haha, how pathetic is that? >w>
Well, goodnight.

Quick Update About My LookBook & Art.

I’ve never been all that obsessed with outfit photos of my own, just because I rarely get dressed anyways (I am usually in my PJs, I hate being uncomfortable when I’m home alone), and the lighting in my house sucks. But every once in a while I decide to get Trev to take a photo of me so I can remember how I put a specific outfit together… This is one of those times. And for whatever reason this time I decided to try to make the photos look decent and post it on LookBook. Probably because I went on a LookBook craze the other day, looking through Natanya’s hypes (which were mostly all things I ended up hyping too, she’s got great style and taste), and also obsessed over this girl’s gorgeous outfits, Dotthy. Anyway, if you have a LookBook account, would you be so kind as to “hype” my outfits when I post them? If you want to, that is. My photos are poor-ish quality because of the lighting, and especially boring compared to other’s posts. But maybe if I do more of these in the future they will be better. One of my goals for when we move (yes I know that’s like 6 months away, but all of my”future” projects are being put off to “when we move”), is to have BETTER LIGHTING.

I don’t know what it is about the places I live, maybe it’s just me, who knows. But it seems like the lighting is never good. We even have a huge sliding door and a big window in my art room, but it seems to be the only decent sources of light. I hope in the future we can do something to make the lighting better, maybe lighter wall colors will help…

Anyway here is what I wore the other day. I love lace, so I like to try to find ways to incorporate all my lacey lingerie and slips and nightgowns into my regular outfits. I wore a lacey slip tucked into my skirt and covered with a peach cardigan here. Along with black garters and knee high socks. I like this outfit, so I will probably wear it again for our anniversary next week.
I’ll probably wear something a little more “romantic” for Valentine’s dinner on Thursday.

So since this coming Tuesday (the 21st) is mine and Trevor’s 5 year anniversary, I wanted to do something nice for him, so I decided to make him a couple of things and get him a small gift (since I am broke broke broke)… The gift I bought was Dead Red Redemption on ps3 for less the $5! Thank you used items! : D It looks really fun, I’m actually looking forward to having it so I can play the free roam mode. I love roaming around game worlds… It’s like, my favorite thing…
And of course this game totally looks like something Trev would like. I have no idea if it’s any good but it’s in keeping to his style and game play preference, from what I can tell…

I also made him a little Valentine’s Day card, which I haven’t yet photographed, and I’m in the process of drawing him a charcoal painting of an owl. The great horned owl is his spirit animal, so I thought he might like a nice serious looking drawing of that. Instead of something like a girl with a black eye, my typical subject… Haha, this is more his style… I hope he likes it. And more than that, I hope I don’t ruin it once I get into the charcoal phase of it! I’ve only done a preliminary drawing so far.

Sorry those photos are awful but I had to really edit the hell out of it so you can even see the light penciling.

The past few days I’ve been trying to organize some of my drawings and such. I decided I needed to finally spray down my charcoal drawings with some fixative and store them in my big portfolio to keep them out of the way (and out of harm). What a pain, but I’m glad I’ve got them all sorted out now. Here’s some photos I took of some of them drying… I had them draped over the furniture because I was running out of room that wasn’t in the direct path of the cat and dog, haha… I’ll have to find a better system for the future.

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about my future as an “artist”. I use quotations because sometimes I still feel like a totally inexperienced untalented little kid dreaming about being the “allusive artist“. But in reality, I’ve done a lot of things for having also been juggling school (and not even for an art degree, but psychology) and various growing pains. But obviously I’m not quite there still, not even almost.
I want to get a lot more organized and experienced and just refined in general. Like, I want to have a clear direction and path and style. I want to sit down and churn out entire casts of characters for a narrative completely my own. I already do that really, but it’s only clear to me. I want to do something more detail oriented, something that takes patience and determination every day. I’ve been (once again), taking a lot of inspiration from Emily Winfield Martin. I guess following her blog obsessively is my current “flavor of the month” (which just means I am currently obsessed but will eventually chill out and just have a regular appreciation rather than an “omg i wish i had your life” feeling). I don’t know what it is about her art that I am so into, other than it being so sweet and homely feeling while still being really unique and pretty. Maybe it’s the fact that she’s the first modern artist I’ve seen that’s consistently doing paper doll art (which I am a HUGE fan of, it’s weird to me that more people don’t appreciate the beauty of paper dolls!), or her connection with Alice in Wonderland themes (something I share deeply).
Her art and artist career just seems perfect. Not overwhelming like Audrey Kawasaki‘s fanbase and artistic demands (she’s obviously very lucky, but it seems like it might be exhausting to be so popular? I don’t know…), but not so small that she’s confined to local art recognition. I guess she’s quite popular otherwise she wouldn’t have two books out. Anyway, I guess I just love that she 1) draws girls 2) does children’s illustrations (something I want SO badly to get in on), and 2) the themes she does; paper dolls, wonderland, animal themes, etc… It just seems like she has a nice thing going, and her art is lovely, and her blog is lovely. I hope eventually I’ll feel the same way about my own art and blog and everything…

I’m workin’ on it…

Anyway. I need to wrap this entry up, need to get ready for bed.

On a sad note, Trevor’s uncle passed away, and we’re going out there to be with his family. Not that I needed to write that here, but it feels weird posting two entries in one day and not even mentioning it. Like it’s not all that’s been on my mind the past two days. Anyway, they don’t read this but it doesn’t matter.

The Design for my Site I’ve Been Working on…

I’m in the middle of redesigning my website, and as you might have noticed (or maybe not), I’ve also been changing all my other sites to match with the new design (ex, this diary).
Usually I would have liked to make all the changes at once, transition immediately to a new design so that everything was seamless… But I decided after some thinking that that was silly. It takes far too long to make a new design, what with all the graphics, artwork, coding, etc that goes into it. I didn’t want to wait a half year before changing over, and I certainly didn’t want to have to rush to change everything at once. So I am slowly easing into it, when I can, as I have the time…
And I also decided that the whole “surprise” approach to posting news and art online for everyone to see is silly as well. I think I’d rather just post about it as I’m doing it, because frankly, it is extremely unsatisfying to spend a years time creating something, only to have a weeks time worth of “look at what i made!” before you feel like you’re spamming everyone and no one has an interest anymore anyway, haha.
So instead, I decided to just show you some of what I’ve made so far, and maybe more of it later, as it all comes together.

Preview video and other images after cut…

Redesign Preview of BEYOURPET.com from Brittanie Pendleton on Vimeo.

And as for my profiles, I’m trying to start updating some of the ones I intend to keep using, so yesterday was Flickr… And soon I’ll be trying to make my DeviantArt and Facebook look better. I feel like they’re all a total mess right now. It feels nice to finally get more organized.

A banner I made for my Flickr profile:

To tell you just a little bit of what I am going for with this design…
I of course have always loved Alice in Wonderland, American Mcgee’s Alice, Victorian era, and all girly and frilly things. So naturally I love doll houses, vintage patterns, dioramas, drawings and charts, etc. Well, I used to have a paper doll house (it was a haunted mansion, that I still can’t find anywhere) that I am seriously obsessed with, and I’ve been wanting to make a similar house for myself for a while now.
That will take more effort and time of course, but for now, I wanted to incorporate a dollhouse into my theme somehow. And when I came across these pretties from this store, I decided to make it the way you see in the preview video I made, simplistic and kind of creepy. For some reason the basic design of a dollhouse really stands out to me. I think that’s part of why I loved the movie The Ring so much, because of Samara’s creepy burnt into the wall barn loft bedroom. Such gorgeousness!

So I drew a burnt looking stark dollhouse in charcoal on 18×24 paper. Among other related things…

Here’s some examples of the aesthetic I’m interested in…

On another note, I just started watching Downton Abbey with Trev tonight, we’re on the second episode (so if you watch it, no spoilers please!)… I LOVE it. I love everything from that time period, it’s so interesting to me. Makes me want to read some more or watch some documentaries or something about the era. Such a gorgeous and strange time…
And, well, you know… McGonagall.

Planners I like, & How to Find Them

I actually meant to post this entry a month ago, but I guess I forgot I hadn’t, because of Christmas and New Years and all…
Well at least it’s still only January, so if anyone is still planning to buy a planner for 2012, maybe this entry will help.

I always like to buy really cute planners, and I never had much luck in finding them until I turned to the interweb. Now I always get my planners from Asian goods sellers from Ebay, and usually don’t spend any more than I would if I was buying it in a store in my town. I’m so weird about planners, you have to get just the right one so that it’ll be exciting to use it all year long, through the good events and bad, the ones you look forward to and the ones you dread…
So I always look for a) a cute design that cheers me up, b) good organizational abilities (like having lots of sections and places to write), and c) a body shape that isn’t too big or too small, not too thick or too thin (because it needs to fit in my purse, but not be so small I can’t write in it easily). I usually spend a good few hours searching online until I’ve found the one I like best.

Here are some of the sellers I’ve favorited in the past because they either had or have good planners or other cute Asian good for reasonable prices. Most of these sellers are based in China and Korea, but they seem to sell goods from all over.
Sorry if some shops don’t have any items or aren’t listing anything useful currently. They tend to change and move out goods fairly quickly, bookmark it and check again later if this is the case.
READ: I am not vouching for these seller’s ability or honesty. I’ve only bought from a few of them, and have had good experiences. But use your own judgement when it comes to buying from sellers online, and refer to their user ratings and reviews to see if you think you can trust them, it’s up to you…

This entry shows the one I had for 2011 (scroll to near the end of the entry), it was a really cute Bonny Berry brand diary, really bright and happy feeling with a little girl and her cat throughout. Just about everything was in color and illustrated, no boring pages or sections. It must have taken the artist ages to prepare this layout!

Here’s what I have for 2012, a binder, a planner (Korean), a pink micro pen the seller sent with the planner for free, and lots of stickers!

My 2012 planner is less colorful, but I wanted something that felt a little cleaner but still had the cute illustrations throughout. This one has a little kitty called chococat (not sanrio), who travels with a bear to a chocolate land. It also came with some stickers, and some really cute divider stickers!

The stickers of the girl were a separate purchase from the planner. They’re called “Bonnie Series”, by another Korean brand. It was a really good deal, I think I spent $4 or something and it came with 6 sheets of stickers. And as you can see, it includes a lot of little stickers. I love being able to decorate my planner with stickers all year, they make it so much more fun. ^ o ^

So far I’ve been keeping up with my planner daily. I always end up falling off on some months, forgetting to write, forgetting to keep up with it. But this year I want to really try to do better. I’ll have to get a real job at some point, so I intend to keep this planner with me throughout the day (in my purse) so that I can keep up with my schedule and have better organization between home life, art life, and work life.
I also wanted to organize more of my things and little scraps of paper. I take a lot of mental notes on paper and tend to just leave them lying about, so I wanted to organize them all and keep up with them. So I prepared a little binder for my planner, and then a bigger binder for large papers. The little binder (with the kitty eyes) is actually a binder that a planner I had in 2008 came in. It’s just a plain black leatherette binder, it has some organizational compartments inside. It was actually really useful and the perfect size, so I decided to keep my slightly smaller 2012 planner inside of it, to help protect the cover and to keep some pens and stickers inside safely.
I wanted it to look cute so I made and glued on some kitty eyes, so now it looks like my kitty Twitch.

The first illustration comic (shown on the first few pages which was the monthly calendar) shows him trying to get a job at a chocolate factory, falling asleep in the interview, and getting kicked out of the interview. It’s really cute! ^ u ^

At the same time I bought the stickers and planner, I also got this purse organizer (from a different seller, but also Asian goods — they’re always cheaper and much cuter!). This thing is crazy useful. It’s pretty small so it fits perfectly in my purse without being too small or too big. It has a TON of card holder slots, one on the outside and one on the inside where you can keep your more important cards safer. And it has little compartments all throughout to put your various things (cell phone, wallet, etc). And the great thing is, you can just pull it out and put in in another purse if you’re switching out and wanna do it quickly!

Here’s the binder I’m now keeping all of my random scraps of note paper, stuff I write down and don’t want to lose. Off the top of my head I know I have sections for: Everyday to-dos, Master to-do list, daily/weekly/monthly/seasonal to-do and cleaning lists, birthday tracker, blog ideas list, art ideas, items to make for etsy ideas, webdesign ideas… The list could actually go on. I write down ideas almost everyday it seems like, and of course it would be a total shame to just forget about them all and let them fall apart in some random place in my room, so I like keeping them all safe so I can refer back to them easily when I need an idea for something to do.

I even bought some organizing tabbed dividers to keep them all organized by category.

And these pretty glitter notebook binders were on sale for like a dollar!

Here’s a gif from the seller’s listing of cutie chococat, it’s an actual flipbook animation from the planner!

Games I like: Limbo for PS3

I’ve been in the mood to play some good video games lately, and because we didn’t have anything good already, and my options are ordering something from GameHuddle a while ahead of the time I want to play it, or spend $10 on a game from BlockBuster that is probably chosen out of slim pickings to begin with (ie, not very fun), I just scratched the itch by playing some downloadable demos on my roommate’s PS3.

There’s actually not much to choose from there either, but they have a few good ones. One I came across by chance was something that I’m really really happy to have found because it is GORGEOUS and fun. It’s called Limbo. I think it’s more of a puzzle style game (which I usually don’t care for), but because of the beautifully creepy art and the calm but scared feeling it gives you, I really liked it.
I’m pretty sure it’s also available for computer and some other gaming systems…
I’ll definitely be renting the full version as soon as I’m done getting my fill of Silent Hill like I’ve been aching for for months now… Next weekend… If I can make it that long…

Here’s some video from Limbo:
